On 27 October, the Umlazi International Film Festival held an impactful talk on the challenges related to navigating the film and television industry. The activation was part of the Durban Business Fair that took place from 24 to 27 October at KwaMnyandu in Umlazi. The aim of the Business Fair was to empower local businesses by allowing them the platform to showcase their products and services to a wider market within the Durban South Region area.
The talks panel included film and television experts, Thabo Mnguni, Sabelo Msomi, Thandeka Ndenza, Thandiwe Ndenza, Baby Cele, Princess Swati Dlamini, Happiness Mpase and Siyabonga Ndlozi. Facilitator duties were preceded over by Sabelo Ngema and Michael Ngema, with Sandile Dlamini as the talks Master of Ceremonies.
The talk was mostly attended by youth who wish to enter into the film and television industry as well as graduates faced with challenges whilst trying to enter into the creative space. Supportive community members and parents were also in attendance. The variety of topics covered talent scouting and Thabo Mnguni who played, Mbatha on Uzalo cautioned the aspiring film and television stars that no agent should request a joining fee from new talent recruit. Said that it is important to establish a relationship with skilled and experienced producers who have a broad film and television network. When submitting a request for production and development funding. “Writers need to find their own peers to work with, find a supervising producer to assist you using their network within the film and television industry.” “Mention in your proposal that you have not produced before, and mention that you have a seasoned producer who has worked closely with funders.” She said that the supervising producers CV will encourage KZNTAFA to prioritize the applicants request for funding.
For a more appealing application, Happiness Mpase further added advised. Once an application for project or development has been received. Producers will look at the short synopsis, a tagline and the dramatic question of the production submitted. If the applicant is able to capture the producer in their short pitch, the producer who has received the application, will respond to the applicant requesting the long synopsis or narrative treatment of the production.
